THE NEW OLD AGE. Part 3

Chronological Age vs Biological Age - what is the difference? Which one is more important? I believe all age-related decisions such as employment, retirement, running for a political office should be made according to biological age, more than chronological age.

THE NEW OLD AGE. Part 2

Which aspect of aging should we take more into consideration - chronological or biological age - when we make age related decisions? As I become an octogenarian doctor, I look at old age differently.

THE NEW OLD AGE

The biology of aging is being investigated on cellular and molecular level in tissue cultures, on healthy older old people, and in wild animals with exceptionally long lifespans. Read on for more insight into longevity medicine.

THINKING ABOUT BIODIVERSITY IN NATURE, PART 2

Thanks to the advanced medical sciences and improved food sources and nutrition, humans are steadily increasing in number and approaching 8 billion. This insurmountable number, not only creating an imbalance in the nature but also many logistic problems. How are we going to be able to feed, cloth, house, educate, employ, and protect them from the ravages of climate change without invading and destroying the living environment of other species, thereby causing their disappearance?

AN UNCOMFORTABLE TOPIC, HEMORRHOIDS

More than half of the adult population suffers from hemorrhoids. Burning, itching, discomfort, pain, bleeding, and protruding piles from the rectum during bowel movements are some of the common complaints. What are hemorrhoids and why do we develop them?

WHILE WELCOMING 2023, I’M VERY CONCERNED

I’m very concerned seeing a perfect storm of destruction gathering right in front of our eyes, in form of massive advertising by gambling companies to bet on sporting events, and the legalization of marijuana sales for recreational use by many states, while it remains illegal by the federal government.

T R A N S G E N D E R I S M

As a gastroenterologist with many years of clinical practice experience, I have always been fascinated with brain-and-body communication and miscommunication, and its role in the development of mental and organic diseases. To me, one of the most curious brain-and-body miscommunication disorders is transgenderism. I believe there is lack of scientific knowledge and understanding among research scientists and among the general public. In this essay, I would like to discuss my opinions and understanding about transgenderism.

CHILDHOOD MEMORIES AND EXPERIENCES

At 5 years old, I was taken away from my crowded family living in a small village in Eastern Anatolia for education purposes by my uncle, to a city in Western Anatolia. My uncle was a judge and never married, nor had children of his own. He had no idea as to how to raise a boy to become a better man. So, that’s how I lost my father’s influence on me and his guidance in my life. I often cried, missing my parents, my family, my sibling, playmates and felt homesick. But learned later in the life that the things that my father failed to provide me were nothing compared to what he gave me.

EMOTIONS, FEELINGS AND MOOD Part 2

I remember clearly during my upbringing and many years of education that to be smart and rational, logical thinking was all that was required. Emotions and feelings only make us act with emotional and irrational impulses, and therefore they are considered weaknesses of character. At a one stage of my adult life, I finally realized that I am a very emotional person. I always have very strong opinions about things in life, and that they are an inseparable part of me and make me who I am.

EMOTIONS, FEELINGS AND MOODS Part 1

Our brain is the most complex, mysterious and sophisticated organ there is. As I see it, our brain is composed of an unimaginable 86 billion interconnected biological nano-computers. Among the many functions of our brain, one of the most essential is to create the mind and our consciousness.
